Driving Croonerism: Towards A Dialectical Analysis

The Driver Crooner represents the false consciousness of the labor aristocratic proletarian as they aspire towards petit-bourgeois models of performance and ownership. His pretensions towards ownership of capital are self-evident, proudly proclaiming to his fellow proletarian “[he owns] this” and expressing profound anxiety at the thought of his means-making property (his decals) being stolen. Like all aspirant petit-bourgeois he seeks to expand his small business into a larger business by enlisting the wage labor of Richard from work. At the same time, the Driving Crooner represents the capitalist degradation of performance and art, as his primary concern is how he can make money off of his nascent intellectual property (he really wants to) over any artistic or political considerations of the Driving Crooner. Such pretensions distract him from the work of building class solidarity with his fellow proletarians outside of their place of employment.
